Come join us for our annual New Year's Day ride. Featuring "Presidential Pancakes" with stone ground batter recently brought back from Helen Georgia (after a 3 gap ride). We'll also have pancakes by Dave and special delicacies by Natalie that you won't want to miss. Also, bring your own breakfast dish or after ride snack and beverage. We eat at 10 a.m, group photo at 11 a.m. and ride at 11:15.  It'll be 22 miles slow pace except for the last few miles on McAfee Road where Dave will lead us over the 7 hills of pain. More info here.

One Love,

Hillarious 4 (Challenge)

MACC and Friends,

Last Sunday I took Dave Sutherland's challenge and entered the 4th annual Hillarious.

pic_HILLarious_2011Hillarious is an race run by the Virginia Highland Velo Club that races up the 13 hardest hills in North Atlanta.  Everyone rides together to each hill.  Lines up at the bottom and races to the top where they have people recording race numbers to keep track of where the riders finish.  You get points depending on how you place, and the hills have different degrees of difficulty.

I came in between second and forth the first 5 climbs.  Then my luck started to change.  I got another second but beat the guys who had been beating me.  On Northside I got my first win.  Felt like I'd won a stage in the tour.  The next hill Dave Hicks (who had the most wins) slipped out of his pedal and had to stop.  I got another win and started to think about winning the whole thing.  I didn't know what the score was so I thought if this ends and I lose by 1 point I don't want to think I could have done this or that.  So I just raced to get the best place I could on all the remaining climbs.  In spite of the competition everyone doing the race was friendly and had a great spirit that cyclists get when suffering together.

As you all know it's hard to get a win in this sport but when you do, it's good to have friends to share it with.  I'll be looking for you all this weekend with something in the back of the van.
Thank you Dave for your invaluable support.  I'll have to split that I-phone I won with you :)

THE OCCASION

With Thanksgiving barely two days old, and the extra calories and gastronomic excesses accompanying it still lingering, a host of local riders convened for a commemoration ride in southwest Atlanta. The occasion was an answer to the call by the National Brotherhood of Cyclists (NBC) for a national ride in celebration of the World Champion cyclist Major Taylor.

Born on November 26, 1878, Marshall "Major" Taylor had been marginalized and been all but forgotten, relegated to the dustbin of history as a mere footnote on the landscape of excellence in cycling. His crime? He had the audacity ...

One Love Thanks from the President

MACC and Friends,

I want to thank everyone who was a part of One Love 2011. In the 6 years we have been doing One Love I'd estimate we have raised over $40,000 for our beneficiaries. This happens as a result of club members giving time and not expensing most of what we do. Great sponsors. Pricing our ride so it is the best value for a century anywhere. We have also provided a ride where cyclists feel supported by cyclists. This mean they recognize the quality and enthusiasm of our support and also know they are being supported by folks who know what they are going through. That's how we meet our mission of supporting cycling in the black community and building camaraderie among all cyclists.  <read full story>
